The Omega Speedmaster First Omega in Space 39.7mm ref. 310.30.40.50.06.001 is a tribute to one of the most significant milestones in the history of space exploration—the first Omega watch worn in space by astronaut Wally Schirra during the Sigma 7 mission in 1962. This model draws inspiration from the original design, capturing the vintage charm of the Speedmaster while incorporating modern materials and technologies. The 39.7mm stainless steel case strikes a balanced size, offering a more compact and wearable alternative to the larger models in the Speedmaster family. The clean, black dial with its iconic tachymeter scale, paired with the distinctive silver hands and markers, evokes the watch's rich heritage, ensuring it is immediately recognizable as a true classic.
The Omega Speedmaster First Omega in Space is powered by the manually-wound Omega Caliber 1861, a movement that continues the legacy of the original manual chronograph movement used in NASA's space missions. This movement offers a precise 48-hour power reserve and features the chronograph functions typically seen in the Speedmaster series. The layout includes a 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o'clock, and a 12-hour counter at 6 o'clock. While the watch is rooted in history, the Caliber 1861 provides a robust and reliable performance, making this watch not just a piece of history, but also a practical and functional tool for modern-day wearers.
Adding to the charm of the Omega Speedmaster First Omega in Space is its distinctive black leather strap, which complements the vintage-inspired look while enhancing the overall elegance of the timepiece. The strap’s simple yet sophisticated design contributes to the watch’s versatility, allowing it to transition effortlessly from casual to formal occasions. Additionally, the watch features a sapphire crystal case back, allowing the wearer to admire the intricacies of the manual movement. With its timeless design, historical significance, and dependable craftsmanship, the Speedmaster First Omega in Space 39.7mm stands as a perfect blend of heritage and modernity, making it a highly sought-after piece for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
